How to Wash Printed Shirts in Pakistan So the Colours Never Fade
Share
You bought a bright, all-over printed shirt. It arrived, you loved it, and now the only worry left is a simple one: will it still look this good after ten washes? It's a fair question, and honestly it's the reason a lot of people hesitate before buying printed clothing online in Pakistan. The good news is that a sublimation printed shirt doesn't fade the way a cheap screen print does — but how you wash it still makes a real difference. Here's exactly how to care for your printed shirts so the colours stay sharp for years.
First, why sublimation prints last longer
Before the how-to, it helps to know what you're actually washing. Most of our shirts are made using all-over sublimation printing, where the ink turns into a gas and bonds directly into the fabric fibres instead of sitting on top of them. There's no thick rubbery layer to crack, peel, or flake off. We covered this in detail in our guide on sublimation vs screen printing, but the short version is this: the colour is part of the fabric now, not a sticker on it. That's why our Hawaiian shirts and all-over printed tees hold their colour far better than a typical printed shirt from the market.
Still, fabric is fabric. Rough washing, harsh detergent, and strong sunlight will wear down any garment over time. A little care goes a long way.
The simple washing routine
Turn it inside out
This one habit does most of the work. Turning the shirt inside out before washing means the printed surface rubs against your other clothes and the drum a lot less. For anything with a bold print — your Hawaiian shirts, a Tommy Vercetti shirt, or a football jersey — this is the single most useful step.
Cold water, gentle cycle
Wash in cold or lukewarm water, never hot. Hot water is hard on fabric fibres and can loosen stitching over time. If your machine has a gentle or delicate setting, use it. Hand washing is completely fine too, and it's actually the kindest option for a shirt you really care about.
Go easy on the detergent
Use a mild detergent and only a normal amount — more soap does not mean cleaner clothes, it just means more residue. The big one to avoid is bleach or any "colour-safe" bleach powder. Bleach is designed to strip colour, which is the last thing you want. Skip the fabric softener too; it builds up on fabric and can dull the print over time.
Drying: where most colours actually die
Here's the part people get wrong. It's usually not the wash that fades a shirt in Pakistan — it's the drying. Hanging a wet, brightly printed shirt in direct Karachi or Lahore sun for hours is the fastest way to lighten any colour. Strong UV fades everything, printed or not.
Instead, dry your printed shirts in shade or indoors with good airflow. Turn them inside out on the line so the sun hits the inner side first. If you use a dryer, keep it on low heat — high heat is unnecessary stress on the fabric. Take shirts out while they're still very slightly damp and let them finish air-drying; they'll wrinkle less too.
Ironing without damaging the print
You can absolutely iron a sublimation shirt, just do it smartly. Turn the shirt inside out and iron on the reverse side on a medium setting. If you need to iron the printed side directly, place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the shirt so the metal plate never touches the print at full heat. Avoid parking a very hot iron on one spot. For our premium cotton line, a quick steam or medium iron is all you'll ever need.
A quick care checklist
To keep it simple, here's the whole routine in one place: turn the shirt inside out, wash cold on a gentle cycle with mild detergent, skip the bleach and fabric softener, dry in shade rather than harsh sun, and iron inside out on medium heat. Follow that and your shirts will look almost new for a very long time.
This applies across the board — the same routine keeps our kids printed t-shirts looking fresh through school terms and playtime, keeps a printed polo sharp for work, and keeps a football jersey match-ready season after season.
